How to Create an Online Flash Mob
An example of a well known meme, is the Budweiser campaign "Whassup?", which is also cited in the above Ad Age article. I can remember a few years ago when everybody was sending each other the latest version of the Bud campaigns by email.
Recently, I was showing the 'alien' version of the Bud campaign, to my sister and friend, where a spy alien disguised as a dog takes the "Whassup?" message back to his home planet. You can view the video from the links at the end of this article.
My sister's friend works in a bank in France. He knew about the Whassup campaign, and immediately associated it with Budweiser, but not this specific ad. He recalled it as being a 'call between friends, drinking a beer' concept. Which is not bad for a summary So I think the campaign has done pretty well crossing continents and overcoming the language barrier. Obviously the beauty is in the simplicity of the message. Err, fun advert, but, what message, you may say !?
Having worked on online marketing campaigns in ad companies I can assure you that being the creator of a meme is like the holy grail for most of us. Being popular isn't always synonymous with quality but a meme is a meme. So do you think you can come up with the next meme everybody will be talking about ?
