Watch where the eyes go

I recommend a very interesting article in which Nielsen explains on useit.com following an eyetracking study, how the majority of visitors to a web site will view pages. The resulting conclusion is called the “The F shaped pattern reading” concept.
This is concluded by the fact that nearly all readers have an initial horizontal movement of the eye, followed by a second horizontal movement slightly lower down, with finally a vertical movement to the left, which concludes the scan of the page.

The study comprises combined results of 232 users who looked at thousands of web pages. The study is aimed more at companies and commerce sites than publishing type sites but the analysis and images are pretty impressive and worth your time whether you opt for an F shaped read or a simple horizontal read of Nielsen's article !
