Danny Sullivan, before diving into the world of search was in journalism but is without doubt the most famous 'search' guy without any specific search qualifications.
One of his key achievements was to have created a solid 'search community' where people helped each other. His second achievement, in my opinion was to provide useful and interesting content for free while creating a paid version of more specific and valuable information. I think it works well in this case since the information provided was often used by people reselling (and sometimes regurgitating) Sullivan's words of wisdom.
To move slightly off subject I feel in this way that LinkedIn has got it all wrong. They are being greedy by trying to ransom you to get in contact with previous colleagues now that they have created their client base. Not making any money from it myself I feel like I'm being cheated and I no longer want to be part of it !
Whether it is Sullivan or Mecklermedia the system works and fits in with the original ethics of the Internet, has been providing from the beggining and continues to provide great information about the Search Industry.
So farewell to Danny at SES and SEW and thanks for all you brought to us all. I'm sure this is just a stepping stone...
